A Trailblazer in the Trades Industry

Jason Herd's journey in the trades industry began at a young age. At just 16, he was among the first youths enrolled in the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program during its inaugural year. Demonstrating exceptional drive and commitment, Jason completed a two-year diploma program in just 18 months, and was working as a licensed electrician by the age of 21.

Starting as a foreman at his family's electrical business, Fairway Electrical, Jason quickly progressed through various roles, including project manager, estimator, vice president & director of business development, and eventually president. He guided Fairway Electrical through a rapid period of growth from $3.5 million to over $20 million in revenue, earning a spot on Canada's Growth 500 list twice and being recognized as one of Hamilton's top 40 fastest-growing companies.

Pioneering Tradetraks

Jason's visionary approach led him to identify gaps in Fairway's operational processes. He found existing platforms for scheduling, dispatching, project management, and estimating to be complicated, expensive, and poorly integrated. Determined to find a better solution, Jason meticulously designed the architecture and functionality of a new application, assembled a Canadian-based development team, and launched Tradetraks Inc. in 2019.

Tradetraks has revolutionized the construction and service trades industry by automating and streamlining operations, finances, health and safety, human resources, and internal communications. The platform empowers everyone from frontline workers to company owners to make better decisions. Today, more than 50 Canadian contractors rely on Tradetraks to enhance their business operations, and there are plans to expand throughout the U.S. market.

A Legacy of Leadership and Innovation

Throughout his career, Jason has overseen significant projects that have left a lasting impact on the industry. From the planning, estimating, and installation of the electrical system at Hamilton's Tim Hortons Field to managing large-scale projects such as a train layover facility in Kitchener and a 44-megawatt solar farm for Ontario Power Generation, Jason's leadership has been instrumental in achieving success.

Educational Foundation and Industry Contributions

Jason's education at Mohawk College played a pivotal role in his career achievements. Graduating from the Electrical Engineering Technician – Power program in 2004 and an apprenticeship program in 2005, Jason's college education provided a strong foundation for his professional journey. The opportunities he received through co-op programs and the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program allowed him to gain valuable experience and set him up for success as a leader and entrepreneur.

As the CEO of Tradetraks, Jason continues to make significant contributions to the trades sector. The platform has received accolades from industry professionals for its ability to improve operational efficiency, streamline administrative efforts, and enhance profitability. Jason's commitment to innovation has earned him recognition as a top 40 under 40 by SiteNews and Business Link Media Group, as well as the Young Leader award from the Hamilton Halton Construction Association.

Championing Community Engagement

Jason's dedication extends beyond the professional realm into his community. He serves as the current Vice-President of the Hamilton Halton Construction Association, demonstrating his commitment to advancing the industry and supporting local trades professionals. Jason also plays a pivotal role in youth development as the Initiation Program Director of the Ancaster Minor Hockey League, where he channels his passion for hockey into coaching both of his children's hockey teams. His involvement in these roles showcases his commitment to nurturing the next generation and giving back to the community that has supported his journey.
